Britannia Coins and Tax Efficiency
Due to their status as UK legal tender, Britannia bullion coins are exempt from Capital Gains Tax (CGT) for UK residents; CGT is a tax paid on any profit or gain made on an asset when sold, over a tax-free allowance. For the tax year 2023–24, the UK Government reduced the tax-free allowance, the first reduction of its kind in decades. It is worth noting that all gold, silver and platinum bullion coins from The Royal Mint are exempt from CGT, whilst our gold bullion coins and bars are also exempt from Value Added Tax (VAT).

Our Britannia bullion coin is recognised as a world leader in bullion security, thanks to the four innovative security features added to the coin in 2021. These include a latent image that switches between a trident and a padlock when the coin is turned, micro-text that displays ‘DECUS ET TUTAMEN’, which translates to ‘An ornament and a safeguard’, tincture lines and an animated background. These features significantly reduce the risk of counterfeiting and mean that Britannia bullion coins are easy to authenticate visually.
The Value of Britannia Coins
The value of Britannia bullion coins is based on their gold content. Initially struck in 22 carat gold when it was introduced in 1987, the Britannia bullion coin has been struck in 24 carat gold since 2013, giving it a purity of 999.9.

A New Coinage Portrait
In 2023, we introduced the world’s first bullion coin featuring the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III. Offering investors the chance to commemorate a new era in British history, the portrait appeared on the obverse of the coin, whilst the reverse featured Philip Nathan’s seminal Britannia design.
