Our Craftspeople

The great work we do at The Royal Mint wouldn’t be possible without the talented
craftspeople who make our coin production possible.

David Lawrence
Gordon Summers
Chief Engraver

Chief Engraver of The Royal Mint since 2008, Gordon Summers is responsible for creating an animated coinsecurity feature. This technique has helped make our Britannia the most visually secure bullion coin in the world and can be seen via the surface animated waves in the background of the coin design.

Siriol Hughes
Technical Coin Designer

As Technical Coin Designer, Siriol ensures all models are suitable for the volume and quality of coin we expect. In addition, technical coin designers develop new techniques for our growing product range, such as implementing skills to create new and innovative products like our 15kg coins.

Martin Jennings
Huw Lewis
Thomas Docherty
Coin Designer, Concept and Sculpting

The Royal Mint’s coin designers create more than 50 original works of art each year that commemorate key events, anniversaries and moments in British history. Thomas and the other designers translate the original concept into 2D designs and bring them to life via digital sculpting.

Steve Dyer
Master Toolmaker

Our master toolmakers like Steve are highly skilled engineers responsible for crafting the precise tools and equipment we use every day in our coin-production processes. They also work on coins themselves, ensuring the accuracy and quality of our products. They have recently worked on our exciting remastering of Thomas Simon’s Petition Crown, ensuring it was crafted authentically to Simon’s original idea and design.
